How can I help my dog be less nervous at the groomers?

Your dog may be anxious at the groomers because he or she is not use to being handled in certain areas such as the muzzle, paws, and tail area. To help ease the stress of being handled we recommend touching these areas on a regular basis and then immediately giving a reward such as a treat or a favourite toy so he/she associates the touch with a positive experience.

My dog’s hair is knotted/matted. Do I really need to cut it short?

If the fur gets knotted or “matted”, it is unhealthy for the dog’s skin. Matting tightens when the coat gets wet. Before washing the dog, it is necessary to brush out all the matting. Sometimes the matting is too close to the skin and this cannot be done. In some cases it is possible to “dematt” the coat but, unfortunately this is a very painful process for both the dog AND the groomer. In some cases, dematting may causes skin irritation. If your dog is matted we will ALWAYS advise you on what is necessary.

Can I stay with my dog and watch?

Our grooming area is semi visible, however if your dog can see you this usually leads to the dog trying to get to you and can result in a dangerous situation. The groomer is working with sharp tools and needs to avoid additional stress and excitement. If you want to watch you may take a peek from a distance.

How often should my dog be groomed?

Depending on the style of haircut that you prefer, it is recommend that your dog be groomed every 4 – 6 weeks for medium to long haired dogs. For short haired dogs such as labs, beagles, Rottweilers it is more up to the preference of the owner and environment that the dog is in.

How often should I get my dogs nailed cut/filed?

General rule of thumb is anywhere from every 3 – 4 weeks. The more often that you get them trimmed the shorter you can get the nail to go. Trimming your dog’s nails is one of the most important part of grooming. Overgrown nails can curve and grow into the pad of the foot, causing your dog pain with every step.

Does my pet need to be vaccinated?

To maintain a fair and healthy environment for all our human & canine clients, we need your pet to be vaccinated for Rabies & DHLPP. Please advise us who your Veterinarian is and their contact number(s) when you arrive for your appointment so we may request your information as needed. One of the most valuable means to protect your pet's health and to maintain a healthy environment at our salon is to have your pets properly vaccinated against disease. We do everything in our power to provide a safe and clean environment for your pets, and we ask that you do your part by following your veterinarian's recommended vaccine protocol.
